GSA students Kathryn Rutherford and Aaron Mwale win coveted Laurence Olivier Bursaries. In addition Sarah Dungworth, Jennifer Low, Catherine Mort and Jimmy New have all received awards from the Lionel Bart Association for academic year 2010 - 11.
Kathryn Rutherford an M2 student has been awarded a Laurence Olivier Award
and
Aaron Mwale an A2 student has been awarded the E M Behrens Award.
Congratulations to both Kathryn and Aaron - it it very rare for two students from one drama school to win two awards.
The Bursary scheme was set up in 1987 by the Society of London Theatre to commemorate Laurence Olivier's 80th birthday and aims to help second-year drama students who show considerable talent but are facing financial difficulty in completing the third year of their course. Drama schools in the UK – those accredited by the National Council for Drama Training - are asked to nominate up to two students, who are then invited to attend auditions and interviews with the judges at the St Martins Theatre. Decisions are based on merit with much consideration given to personal financial circumstances.
Several awards are also given by other organisations in conjunction with the Laurence Olivier Bursary scheme. The E.M. Behrens Charitable Trust, established by late banker Michael Behrens.
